Nobody can envision the way forward for technology precisely, because nobody can see the future. Nonetheless there are reasonable discussions that may be made, based primarily on the advances and trends of technology during the past. As an example, it is reasonable to envision that PCs may continue to get stronger, common and cheaper. Areas with big potential which is just starting to be exploited today, like biotechnology, nanotechnology, and other emerging technologies, may continue to bear fruit.
Technology in general will most likely continue to become better as it has for millennia, making both guarantees and hazards. Some futurists have even claimed that the rate of technical progress is increasing, referencing the argument that better tools help us create still better tools, and there exist more talented scientists and engineers today than ever seen.
